Portfolio Project Outline

My portfolio project goals:

  1. Experience selecting and/or creating meaningful artifacts that demonstrate my learning for each course.

  2. Learn more about what makes a meaningful reflection and learn to write meaningful reflections.

  3. Create a pleasing and navigable web to display my Lesley portfolio that also showcases my talents in creating web pages.

  4. Develop the portfolio in an expandable and updatable way that allows me to add personal, professional and future sections to it.

  5. Showcase areas of my personal perspectives on technology in education through the choice of artifacts and the reflections.

Portfolio Overview

Our state has established ICT standards that require electronic student portfolios demonstrating competencies in meeting the new ISTE standards. Our district is embarking on meeting these standards by working with all teachers in all grades to have them help develop the standards for building student e-portfolios. We have had several meetings about how to logically start and support this process. Many of our teachers are enthusiastic about this initiative, although they realize need a lot of training on the technologies. We are approaching it across all subjects – not at all specific to technology skills. Overall we expect to review student portfolios and see evidence of technological competencies but we're encouraging teachers to create meaningful artifacts that represent student perspectives of their learning. I share this background because it influences my approach to creating my own portfolio at this time. Of course I wished I'd worked to create portfolio artifacts and reflections as I'd progressed through my program of study over the last three and a half years but it's very timely for me to work on doing this now, as I proceed into working with teachers and staff in rolling out our district e-portfolio system.

I have already reviewed a variety of methods of creating, storing and displaying portfolios and prefer the flexibility, usability and visual appeal of a website format. In addition, in provides me a way to showcase my skills in creating web pages and experiment with a new project. I always learn something new in each web project I work on.

I expect to go through each course and review the work that I did and the project work. Some courses had several projects that demonstrate specific skills and learning but some courses have fewer artifacts and I may need to create some from journal entries or discussion postings - hopefully I still have access to most of them. Then I plan to create reflections on what I learned and how I felt about creating the artifacts. I hope to create this portfolio in a web format and I plan build upon it as time goes on and I proceed through this journey of working on technology in education, showcasing my learning, teaching, projects and contributions.

Action Plan:

  1. Review each course and select or create meaningful artifacts that adequately reflect my learning from each one.

  2. Create a reflection for each artifact.

  3. Organize artifacts and reflections and develop a presentation that describes what each one is, why it's included, and provide the reflection. I think I'll do it chronologically.

  4. Create a portfolio website with an overall home page, and pages for each course that link to the various artifacts and reflections.

  5. Publish website someplace I can share with the course and teachers in our district.
