PDA Activity Evaluation
The software/lesson that I'd like to work with is Quizzler. It can be used in any content area and could be used in grades 4-12+. It is still supported through the website www.quizzlerpro.com and the resources available there include documentation (getting to be a rare find these days!), clear explanations of the variety of software available and how to use each, and some free quizzes that anyone can download. The software has been optimized to work on iPhone which is encouraging - not only that it is that current but that perhaps the pda/phone merge will continue.
Initially I'd work with teachers to put existing quizzes on Palms as learning practice for students. Once students become fluent using the interface (ought to take all of 10 minutes), I want to teach them to create their own quizzes. We've been having students in middle school grades create their own quizzes on Moodle and it has proven to be a great learning exercise for them. They are quite surprised how difficult it is to create good quizzes and how many mistakes they make along the way. It has proven to be a valuable learning exercise but we don't always have time or access to computers to use Moodle. So the PDAs could be used as an alternative activity. The process to create and format quizzes for the PDA is simple enough for students to learn and use and it also provides an opportunity to teach the little amount of coding that is required to format the quiz - using simple tags. Students can then share their quizzes with each other and experience how they work to have other students answer the questions. This collaboration and communication can provide an opportunity for learning broader than teacher created/student answered evaluations. I'm a big believer in assessments FOR learning and I anticipate this process of creating, sharing and taking these quizzes will be an activity that will fit into that philosophy and provide a variety of reinforcement activities using technology tools to reinforce learning.
ISTE NETS Standards addressed:
-Students are proficient in the use of technology.
-Students use technology tools to enhance learning, increase productivity, and promote creativity.
-Students use telecommunications to collaborate, publish, and interact with peers, experts, and other audiences.
